New Roles ... New Challenges
The Beeches Management Centre designed and delivered a new 'Focusing on Success' programme which was aimed at the newly appointed Co-Directors and Assistant Directors in the new HSC Trusts. The programme was commissioned by the DHSSPS, the key purpose of which was to facilitate these managers to explore effective change transtion methods and personal coping strategies to enable them to achieve early impact in their new roles.
Leaders, regardless of their level in the organisation, are most vulnerable in their first few months in a new position, as they lack detailed knowledge of the challenges they face and what it will take to meet them; nor have they developed a network of relationships to sustain them. Failure to create momentum during the first few months is critical. Building credibility and securing some early wins lays a firm foundation for longer term success.
It was with this understanding and appreciation that the programme was designed to equip managers with the strategies and tools to get them up to speed faster and to achieve more sooner. It was specifcally designed to support these staff facing their new career direction and challenges.
The content of the programme is based around the work of Michael Watkins's who in his book 'The First 90 days: Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels' discusses the importance of making an impact in the first 90 days. The timing of the programme was crucial in that it had to be early after appointment with delivery required during June to early September and with around 100 managers attending.
In recognition of the value of this programme it is now being offered to newly appointed level 4 managers so that they too can be better equipped to take on the new challenges of their roles. If you are interested in this new development opportunity contact William Young at the BMC.
